Breast Augmentation is performed by making an incision in an inconspicuous location to minimize the effects of scars, preparing a pocket in which to place the implant, then inserting the implant and closing the incision. The incision may be periareolar (around the edge of the areola), transaxillary (in the underarm), or inframammary (in the fold where the breast and body meet). Implants consist of a silicone shell and are either filled with silicone gel or saline solution, and are either placed under the chest muscle, or between the chest muscle and breast tissue. Saline-filled implants are filled after they are inserted which means a smaller incision, and that generally means less scarring. Silicone gel-filled implants tend to provide a firmer, more realistic result, but since they must be inserted pre-filled they require a slightly larger incision.
